Navigating JCPS School Choice: A Plain-English Guide for Louisville Parents

If you've just moved to Louisville, or your oldest is about to start kindergarten, the JCPS school assignment system can feel impossible to decode. There's a "resides school," a "Choice Zone," magnets, optional programs, feeder patterns, and a whole vocabulary that nobody explains in one place. This guide walks through how it actually works and what you need to do, in order.

Dates and details change every year. Always confirm against the official JCPS Office of School Choice — this is a map, not a substitute for the district's current instructions.

The one tool to start with: SchoolFinder

Before anything else, look up your address in the JCPS SchoolFinder tool. It tells you which school serves your home — your "resides school" — and whether you fall inside the Choice Zone. If you're unsure, you can also call the JCPS Demographics Office at (502) 485-3050.[3] Everything else depends on knowing these two facts.

Key terms, decoded

Resides school. The school assigned to your home address. Current JCPS students are automatically enrolled in their resides school, so for most families already in the district, no application is needed to stay put.[3]

Choice Zone. A defined area, largely in West Louisville, where families get two assigned options instead of one — a school close to home or one at a distance. This came out of a major 2022 overhaul of an assignment plan that had stood for decades,[8] designed to let West Louisville families keep their kids closer to home if they want to. If you live in the Choice Zone, the rules below are different for you, so read that section carefully.

Magnet schools and programs. Specialized schools or programs (arts, traditional, STEM, etc.) that you must apply to. Students submit one magnet application per year, and applying never guarantees admission. Popular magnets use a lottery.

Optional programs. Like magnets, these require a separate application.

Feeder patterns. JCPS has developed 15 feeder patterns[4] so parents can see the elementary, middle, and high school their student will attend based on their home address. Useful for seeing the long-term path, not just next year.

When you actually need to apply

You need to submit an application if any of these apply:[4]

  • Your child is entering kindergarten
  • Your child has never attended a JCPS school
  • You've had a change of address
  • You want a magnet school or magnet program
  • You live in the Choice Zone and your child is entering the first grade of a level (kindergarten, 6th, or 9th), is new to the district, or has a new Choice Zone address

If none of those fit — your child is a current JCPS student staying at their resides school — you generally don't need to do anything.

The timeline (2026–27 cycle)

For the 2026–27 school year, the application window ran from November 3, 2025 to December 19, 2025, with acceptance notifications going out in April 2026.[1] Future years follow a similar fall-to-December rhythm, so the practical rule is: start exploring schools in the early fall, and have your application in before the December deadline.

Two things parents consistently get wrong here:

  1. Applications are not processed first-come, first-served — they're all processed together at the end of the window.[1] Applying on day one gives you no advantage over applying on the last day. So don't panic-apply, but don't miss the deadline either.
  2. Late applications are accepted but processed based on building capacity — meaning your preferred schools may already be full.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Register first if you're new. If your child is starting kindergarten (turning 5 on or before Aug. 1, 2026) or has never attended a JCPS school, you first register online to get an access key before you can apply.[2] After you register, JCPS verifies your information and emails next steps, which can take up to two business days — so don't leave this to the last minute.
  2. Explore your options. Use the Choices Guides (separate booklets for elementary, middle, and high) and, if you can, the prospective-student tours to get a feel for each school.
  3. Rank your zone schools. All elementary applicants rank the schools within their zone in order of preference, and can also apply for up to two other options such as a magnet school or program.
  4. Submit before the deadline, online or in person at the Office of School Choice.

If you live in the Choice Zone

This is the part that trips people up most, and the rules tightened recently. There is no longer a default school for Choice Zone students — you must complete an application to select your close-to-home or far-away option, and there is no automatic selection made for you.[6] Parents rank the list of schools in their zone.

The critical warning: if a Choice Zone middle or high school student doesn't complete an application, is new to the district, or has a change of address, they will be sent directly to the far-away school to enroll.[5] In plain terms — if you live in the Choice Zone and skip the application, you may not get the close-to-home school you assumed your child would attend. Do not skip it.

One reassuring note for elementary families: JCPS keeps siblings together in elementary school zones, and the district weighs parental choice, space, home address, and student-body diversity when placing students.[4]

A reality check on outcomes

Two things worth setting expectations around:

  • Because of capacity constraints, not all families receive their first choice. Rank honestly and list real second and third preferences.
  • For Choice Zone families, the close-to-home option is genuinely popular — in the first year of the plan, 83% of kindergarten applicants chose schools close to home, versus 33% at the high school level,[9] where families often weigh specific programs and Academies of Louisville pathways.

Transfers and moving mid-year

If you move after the window closes, the process differs by level: elementary students who move and want a new placement update their address and file a new elementary application, while middle and high students update their address and enroll at their new zone school. Be aware that a student transfer application can take 15–20 days to process, longer in summer, approval isn't guaranteed, and transportation may not be provided.[7]

The short version

  1. Look up your address in SchoolFinder. Note your resides school and whether you're in the Choice Zone.
  2. If you're new, register online first to get an access key.
  3. Apply in the fall window (roughly November to mid-December) if you're entering K/6/9, are new, moved, or want a magnet.
  4. Choice Zone families: you must apply to pick close-to-home vs. far-away — there's no default.
  5. Rank honestly, and don't bank on getting your first choice.
  6. Confirm everything with the Office of School Choice at (502) 485-6250.[10]
